Series 188 of record group 58-17 consists of survey maps (ca. 1860-1870) of the Newaygo and Northport State Road, originally collected by the Michigan Lands Division. The Newaygo and Northport State Road was established by Public Act 117 of 1859, amended by Public Act 155 of 1861. It begins at Tyronne Township (Kent County-Newago County border) and ends at Northport, Michigan (137 miles). The maps show physical features such as timber, swamps, burned-over areas, choppings, etc., and names of property owners. The maps also indicate location of Newago (Newago County), Traverse City (Grand Traverse County), Suttons Bay and Northport (Leelanau County). Also includes printed instructions to local commissioners (January 23, 1883). The maps are 10" x 14" in size.
